In 1986, Mossy Oak founder Toxey Haas grew obsessed with the idea of becoming invisible to wildlife, especially wild turkeys. Hunting in south Alabama with his dad Fox, he took a fistful of dirt, sticks and leaves and went to work on what would become Bottomland – the pattern that started it all. A prominent tree on some of the prettiest hunting ground at Fox’s old hunting club Choctaw Bluff was already known as the Mossy Oak tree. Now, he had a name, a pattern and an obsession, and the rest is history.

Mossy Oak quickly became the uniform for anyone who hunted with their back against a tree in a style that relied on getting close to game. Calling wild turkeys in the woods, bow hunting whitetail deer and finishing mallards up close in flooded timber quickly became the roots of this new hunting brand.

Almost 40 years later, our roots have grown stronger, but they remain grounded in the same soil. Our community of Gamekeepers continues to grow, and many of the same things that defined a Mossy Oak person back in 1986 remain true and even more important these days… An old school way of thinking, a reverence for hunting history, the lifelong pursuit of woodsman ship, a desire to leave the land better than you found it, taking care of family traditions and passing those on to our kids and grandkids. These things are woven into the fabric of our culture from Toxey and Fox down through every thread.

From the basics of that first apparel catalog, Mossy Oak has grown beyond Toxey’s wildest dreams to represent all the aspects of a life outdoors that we care about. Mossy Oak Gamekeepers, Mossy Oak Properties, BioLogic, Nativ Nurseries, Gamekeeper Kennels… our roots run deeper than ever, and our commitment to conservation, to taking care of history and traditions for future generations and to raising outdoor families continues to grow stronger.

As long as Mossy Oak exists, we’ll care for the resource and support those organizations and people who stand for the same things. And our camouflage patterns, from the fistful of dirt, hand drawn origins of Bottomland to the abstract or photorealistic modern designs , will remain the uniform for those who share this way of life.
